We had the opportunity to interview Carlo Triarico, president of the Association for Biodynamic Agriculture.<\/p>\n

Agroecology and biodynamic agriculture, what are the differences?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00abOrganic agriculture, thanks to biodynamics which was its beginning, has today reached one hundred years of practical application and field studies – states Triarico -. Bioagriculture is an essential basis for agroecology. Biodynamics now has a base of refereed scientific literature and incorporates all 10 elements that have been defined by the FAO to describe Agroecology.<\/p>\n

In fact, biodynamic agriculture is diversified and preserves, protects and enhances natural resources, implements participatory processes for the co-creation and sharing of knowledge, develops synergies to improve the key functions of food systems, supporting production and multiple ecosystem services, is efficient because it produces using very few external resources, practices recycling which allows it to have lower economic and environmental costs, is resilient, because it is capable of restoring balance in the face of unfavorable external events, is based on precise human and social values, is bearer of food culture and traditions, contributing to food security and nutrition and maintaining the health of ecosystems, practices responsible governance and a circular and solidarity economy, connecting farmers and consumers within a closed-cycle agricultural organism.<\/p>\n

Biodynamics represents the identity of organic farming well. In this context, biodynamic agriculture could therefore be more than satisfied with what it has achieved and not care about how the other actors in the national agricultural system are doing. But this is not the case, biodynamicists are in fact very concerned about the situation of the system as a whole and are available to play an active role to set an example and help those who have to face the challenge of sustainability to overcome the problems relating to the transition towards agroecology”.<\/p>\n

What needs to be done so that the agroecological transition of the Italian agricultural system can be started?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00abWe need to aim to support organic agriculture, as we are doing with the Innovazionebio project to provide training, support for conversion and market for the Italian primacy of organic, a project which was financed by the Ministry of Agriculture. The biodynamic world has the skills and has already achieved the objectives set at European level with the Farm to Fork and biodiversity policies. At the level of the Italian agricultural system, however, we are still behind and the time variable relating to the agroecological transition is a critical variable because if on the one hand we know, as analysts tell us, that we no longer have much time available, on the other we are not in a position to travel at the speed that would be necessary.<\/p>\n

In fact, huge investments are urgently needed, not only economically, but also in relation to social life, which could arise from courageous political choices that facilitate the system in achieving green European leadership, given that we already have European leadership for organic and biodynamic products. It would therefore be appropriate to raise the bar of objectives both in quantitative and qualitative terms.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, biodynamics is aware that we all travel together on the environmental issue. And it is therefore necessary to set ambitious objectives and with staggered time horizons, channeling the forces of the actors in the field, in such a way that those who are further ahead reach out to those who are further behind to face the change that we all face.”<\/p>\n

What could be the role of biodynamic agriculture?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00abThe world of industry and conventional production is currently experiencing an objective risk of dependence on resources external to the process, which cannot be ignored. The geopolitical crisis has made this clear. Heavy inputs must be eliminated and biodynamics, as an excellent expression of bioagriculture, characterized by sociability, politics, skills, techniques and sharing of different cultures, can actively participate so that many farmers can encounter the modernity of a new agricultural model, in the direction of the EU Farm to Fork strategy.<\/p>\n

To do this, research and correct training designed not only for the conventional world are immediately necessary. To give an example, the pesticide license, with a version for organic farming. The organic agricultural world and the environmentalist world must carry forward the same values \u200b\u200band demands and this should be normal. The anomaly, however, is that the rural world and the environmentalist world can find themselves on opposite sides. The fates are common but conflicting interests remain, for example between the various European states where agriculture is very standardized, unlike Italy.<\/p>\n

Here there is a wealth due to diversification and culture, which could disadvantage us. Our task as actors in the Italian agricultural system is to have courage and to pose the urgency of the agroecological transition as a political demand so as not to risk losing the important appointment we have with a lasting future of agriculture”.<\/p>\n

What are the main strengths of biodynamics?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The strengths of biodynamics are the strengths of organic. Biodynamics will celebrate 100 years since its birth next year.\u00a0 We have an enormous heritage of consolidated ecological practices available to everyone, which also include social knowledge that cannot be done without because technique is not enough, production means are not enough.<\/p>\n

Biodynamics could be legally read as a more restrictive practice than organic, but this point of view is reductive. He wants to strengthen organic farming. If we talk about humus, for example, for biodynamicists the rule states that manure cannot be used as is, but only humified, thanks to natural biochemical processes by which organic substances are transformed into other biostimulant substances, soluble and insoluble in humus. This makes sense because it leads to totally different impacts on the ground. The same goes for biodiversity. On our farms there is an obligation to allocate at least 10% to biodiversity areas and this allows us to substantially reduce pathologies in our fields, with a salutogenesis approach. Biodynamics is not only a series of techniques that can be very precious in this historical moment, but it is also a practice of co-evolution.<\/p>\n

In biology, every evolution must be a co-evolution because in fact it is man who, through anthropic interventions, enhances and improves ecosystems. We are used to considering man’s impact as negative when it should instead be a positive element. In other words, the human element over nature should be a value thanks to the ambitious concrete and spiritual objectives that characterize the conscious action of the farmer”.<\/p>\n
